Applied Science is a discipline that applies existing scientific knowledge like mathematics, chemistry and physics, to develop more practical applications such as technology or inventions. The Department of Applied Sciences carries out learning and research activities using both an interdisciplinary approach, seeking the cooperation with specialists in various scientific and practical fields, and a multidisciplinary approach to ridefine problems outside of normal boundaries and focusing on diverse prospective to find a solution. The main study areas of the courses offered in this Department include a broad range of applied science related fields, including engineering, medicine and forensics, primally focusing on what’s related to forensic investigation, security and forensic intelligence.

Robert Milne is a Forensic Expert with over 40 years’ experience at Scotland Yard in the roles of Fingerprint Expert, Crime Scene Examiner (CSI), Crime Scene Coordinator (serious crime), Forensic Intelligence Manager (Head of Forensic Intelligence MIB) and since retirement from Scotland Yard in 2008, a Fire Investigator with Fire Investigations UK LLP, the investigative team with the UK Building Research Establishment (BRE Global). He is the inventor of the Pathfinder wireless, Electrostatic dust mark lifting device used by police services worldwide, including the FBI.
He has dealt with most types of crime including homicide and oversaw developing Forensic Intelligence at Scotland Yard. In 2012 he published the reference book "Forensic Intelligence" CRC Press, Taylor & Francis, a guide to the effective uses of forensics in modern intelligence led policing. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, a Fellow of The Fingerprint Society, The London Region Representative of the UK Association of Fire Investigators, a member of the International association for Identification (IAI) and a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI). Robert spent many years in crime scene examination in London's East End including Whitechapel. Currently he lectures on forensic science and works in Fire Investigation, dealing with Crown Court case reviews, cold case reviews, insurance casework and litigation casework. In 2017 he has written the Forensic Intelligence and Policing Intelligence models module, for the Masters in Criminalistics course at the Istituto di Scienze Forensi - ISF College, Milan.
He is on the register of Professional Expert Witnesses.
He was the Editor of The International Journal of the Fingerprint Society 2013 to 2015, and is a member of the Whitechapel Society. Since 2012, he has been an enrichment lecturer, presenting on the topics of forensic science and historical celebrated cases.
He has lectured on Princess, Cunard and Royal Caribbean ships. He has a friendly style as a presenter and likes to build a rapport with audiences, by welcoming them and inviting general questions about forensics before the lecture start time whilst the audience fills the auditorium.
